Programme description
The PhD programme Geoscience is based on three research foci of the faculty. These are:
- Coupling processes between the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere
- Dynamics and transport processes of the lithosphere
- Coupled processes in Georeservoirs
By participating in a number of externally funded projects, doctoral candidates learn to perform independent scientific work. Through active participation in the scientific affairs of the faculty or the Geoscience Centre, students acquire knowledge and skills that go beyond a curricular programme of study.
Georg-August-University School of Science (GAUSS)
The doctoral programme in Geoscience is captured under the umbrella of the Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS). The GAUSS is responsible for PhD students and supervisors from the five faculties of Biology and Psychology, Chemistry, Geoscience and Geography, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics.
Working on research projects towards their doctorate the students are supported in the development of scientific networks in an international environment on the Göttingen Campus and beyond. The granting of doctoral degrees is however autonomous to each faculty.
DetailsStructure
The doctoral candidate must successfully complete examination prerequisites in a scope totalling at least 20 ECTS credits (C)
The focus of the PhD programme lies on the individual research of the PhD students, which is accompanied by a variety of courses: 20 ECTS are gained by completing courses, one compulsory course on theory and methods is included, and three elective courses are part of the programme (e.g., on reflecting research, scientific communication, scientific teaching, key competencies, etc.).Students are free to decide on the specific courses they will complete during each semester.
