S3.2: Identification and characterization of UPR regulated virulence factors in Ustilago maydis
Efficient communication between biotrophic fungi and their host plants relies on a modified cellular environment provided by activation of the unfolded protein response. While the UPR is commonly required for virulence of fungal pathogens, UPR regulated virulence factors have only begun to be identified (Heimel et al., 2013; Lo Presti et al., 2015; Schmitz et al., 2018; Pinter et al., 2019). This project aims to elucidate the interplay between central UPR regulated factors, and to identify common, redundant and specific functions related to fungal/plant communication. To this end, we will combine novel genetic and biochemical tools established in our lab.
