Research Area 11: Migration agreements: A bilateral avenue to control mobility at global levels
The EU increasingly negotiates migration the way it negotiates trade: through comprehensive bilateral partnerships that link financial and economic cooperation with commitments on mobility, return and border management. His doctoral project asks whether the mobility commitments in these largely non-binding instruments create rights that individuals can rely on and enforce, and under which legal and institutional conditions they open pathways that are reliable, rights-compliant and subject to remedy.
Focusing on the EU's recent partnerships with Mediterranean countries, the project combines doctrinal analysis grounded in EU and international economic law with field research. It examines how such instruments are designed, which interests on both sides shape them, and how they are implemented and experienced in practice
His broader interest lies in how legal accountability is secured when the EU exercises economic power in its external relations, whether through sanctions, trade measures or migration partnerships.
