East Asian Studies/Chinese as a Foreign Language (B.A.) (two subjects)
Features
Are you interested in a world language with a very different writing? This field of study primarily offers intensive language training in modern Chinese, spoken and written. Of course, it makes sense - and is possible - to also acquire knowledge of Chinese history, politics, and society through elective modules. The choice of the second subject needs to be well considered. Language talents might choose a philological subject, but especially methodological subjects such as linguistics, economics or social sciences or law are sensible combinations and open up many future possibilities.

Details
The programme provides basic qualifications in modern Chinese standard language (both spoken and written) as a prerequisite for the mastery of everyday communication. The fifth semester is spent at a Chinese or Taiwanese partner university.
One great strength of the Göttingen Sinology Department is its excellent language training programme. The language is taught exclusively by Chinese native speakers and in groups of less than 15 students. To enable you to consolidate and extend your language proficiency also in a Chinese-speaking environment, we will provide you with intensive support in preparing and implementing your study abroad. Through long-term cooperation with universities in mainland China and Taiwan and regular monitoring of the learning progress achieved in these countries, we ensure optimal language training for our students also during their study abroad.
This is about the use of the optional area of your study program. This area allows you to take content courses or modules of your choice about China or with sinological subjects to the extent of 18 credits, in order to thereby prove the study of the so-called "subject-specific profile". Through this profiling, you will improve your qualification in Chinese studies, so that the possibilities to study a sinological master's program after the bachelor's degree become more diverse.
This degree program prepares students for
- Teaching assignments in the Chinese language, for which an in-depth knowledge of the language and a basic knowledge about the country and the history of modern China inclusive of first experience in both studies and everyday life in situ are a prerequisite.
- Translation and other language-mediating tasks in business enterprises, media, tourism, educational foundations, cultural exchange institutions, librarianship and publishing houses.
- the continuation of the training through the study of a suitable Master of Arts degree program.
The knowledge of English and one other modern foreign language is recommended with at least at the level B2 of the common European framework of reference for languages.
