Prof. Dr. Andrea D. Bührmann
After studying sociology, philosophy and political science, Andrea D. Bührmann obtained her doctorate from the University of Münster in 1995.
She trained as a personnel officer before becoming a research associate at the Chair of Sociology at the University of Paderborn. During her time at the University of Paderborn, Andrea D. Bührmann coordinated the DFG project "The crisis of modernity". With support from a DFG fellowship, she completed her habilitation thesis in 2003 to qualify as a professor in the field of sociology.
Andrea D. Bührmann then worked as acting professor at the Universities of Dortmund and Munich and as a visiting professor at the Universities of Salzburg and Vienna. In 2009 she became adjunct professor at the University of Münster and since 2011 she has held the position of full professor at the University of Göttingen.
In 2013 she became the founding director of the Göttingen Diversity Research Institute. During the summer term of 2014, Professor Bührmann was a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley and, during the summer term of 2015, she was a visiting professor at the University of Klagenfurt.
From 2013 to 2015 she was Associate Dean for Research at the Faculty for Social Sciences. From 2015 to 2017, Andrea D. Bührmann was University Vice President for Studies and Teaching, and, following her re-election, she was University Vice President for Studies and Teaching, Equality and Diversity from 2017 to 2021. Since October 2024, Andrea D. Bührmann is Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
For several years now, Bührmann has been supporting different international and national businesses, universities and municipalities in conceptualising, implementing and evaluating diversity strategies.
In July/August 2018, she was visiting professor at the German Institute for Japanese Studies Tokyo. In October 2021, Andrea D. Bührmann was elected spokesperson for the State Working Group of Institutions for Women's and Gender Studies in Lower Saxony (LAGEN). Since October 2023, she is the elected chairperson of the University Council of the University of Erfurt, of which she has been a member since October 2023.
In recent years, Andrea D. Bührmann has been working on the following topics:
- Sociology of diversity and gender relations (diversity and gender studies)
- Sociology of work and economic sociology / Changes in work and its organisational structures, entrepreneurship research
- Methodology and methods of (qualitative) empirical social research, especially practice research and research on (social) practices
- Sociology of knowledge, particularly studying transformations of knowledge production and consulting
