Christian Rathmann (Hamburg): The Argument Structure of Classifying Predicates in Sign Languages

Based on various semantic and pragmatic tests, I will propose that classifying predicates in sign languages contain one of the following three root morphemes, which have quite different argument structures:

(i) HANDLE (theme, agent and instrument)
(ii) MANIPULATE (theme and agent)
(iii) MOVEMENT/LOCATION (Theme)
