Latin Courses (preparing for the Latinum)

Participation in all courses requires enrollment at Georg-August University. If you are not enrolled, you can find out how to obtain guest auditor status here.

This course comprises 10 semester hours per week (SWS) and is offered every semester. It focuses on Caesar’s *Bellum Gallicum*.
When planning your workload, please note that the course is intensive in terms of both time and effort and is difficult to combine with an overly full schedule or part-time work.
A certificate of participation can be obtained if you take part in the two mock exams held during the semester.
Prerequisite for participation, in addition to enrollment at Georg-August University, is knowledge equivalent to the Kleines Latinum. The course comprises six SWS and is offered only in the winter semester.
It is modularized (the module exam is a 90-minute written test), but also offers the opportunity to take the official state Latinum examination at the end of the semester or during the semester break. Possible authors include Cicero, Livy, Pliny, Sallust, or Seneca.

Please register for the courses via StudIP!
The course for the Großes Latinum and the vacation courses are no longer offered.

Since 2019, the state school authority charges an examination fee of 90 euros.
Requirements for admission include a current certificate of enrollment from Georg-August University Göttingen or (a) current registration certificate(s) of residence. Admission to the supplementary examination in Göttingen is only possible if a current certificate of enrollment from Georg-August University is provided or if the main residence has been in Lower Saxony for at least three months and the main or secondary residence is in the immediate vicinity of Göttingen and within the jurisdiction of the Braunschweig administrative district (cf. § 27, 1 AVO-GOBAK Lower Saxony School Act).
The examination is a state supplementary examination to the Abitur, administered by the school authority, and usually takes place twice a year. The dates depend on the school holidays in Lower Saxony. The examination consists of a written and an oral part. In the written part, a Latin text of approximately 180 words is translated into German within 3 hours using a dictionary. In the oral part, a text of 50–60 words is prepared with the aid of a dictionary during a preparation time of at least 30 minutes and is then translated and explained in terms of grammar, syntax, and content in an examination lasting no more than 20 minutes. If a total of at least 10 points is achieved from the written and oral parts, the examination is passed with the grade “sufficient.” The maximum score is 30 points (15 each). The written exam must not be graded with zero points.
