Analysis of central metabolites
Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) is a robust and efficient method used for analyzing primary metabolism including compounds like amino acids, sugars, sugar alcohols, small dicarboxylic acids, amines, small sulfated and phosphorylated metabolites, and lipophilic compounds. The so far established method covers about 80 metabolites. The derivatization of the samples before GC-MS analysis is a prerequisite to make small organic molecules heat stable and volatile.
