China
The People’s Republic of China, the most populous country in the world with 1.4 billion people, covers an area similar in size to Europe. It offers great geographical diversity with vast landscapes, grasslands, mountains, lakes, rivers, and over 14,000 km of coastline. The capital Beijing (Peking) combines modern architecture with historical sites such as the Forbidden City. Shanghai, on the other hand, is a global financial centre dotted with impressive skyscrapers, and also with an exciting history. The Great Wall of China runs from east to west in the northern part of the country. Besides the Han Chinese, there are officially 55 ethnic minorities with their own languages and in some cases their own written language. As part of the Global Exchange Programme, there are numerous partnerships with renowned universities throughout the country, for example, in Nanjing, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Xiamen.
