1978-1984 Study of Anthropology and African Studies at the University of Freiburg and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London; 1985-2005 Research assistant, assistant und senior assistant at the chair of Islamic Studies at the University of Bayreuth; teaching positions at the universities of Leipzig, Bamberg, and Wien; Visiting Professor at École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris (2004 and 2011) and at the Universität of Göttingen (2005/2006); 2006/2007 ‚research fellow‘ at Zentrum Moderner Orient, Berlin; 2008 Assistant Professor at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Since Oktober 15, 2009 Professor of Anthropology at the University of Göttingen.
