The studies of theology and religion are the main focus of the School of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Tartu, which was called the Faculty of Theology until 2015. The school tries to base its teaching and education upon longstanding traditions, while also adapting to the modern world of today, Because of that, the school offers a productive research environment for both present and future development.
The theology which is being taught at the School of Theology and Religious Studies can be called protestant. While it doesn´t strive to link itself with any particular church, it cooperates with different local churches in Estonia in order to ensure and uphold the quality of theological education. Religious studies on the other hand tries to strictly maintain its neutrality in religious and denominational matters, and uses its acadmeic research and teaching for the study of the many different religions in close relation to the Estonian society.
The School of Theology and Religious Studies has been concentrating its research on the four main topics of History and the Present of Religiosity, Church History, Religious History of the Middle East and the Bible, as well as Contemporary Christian Faith and Practice. Besides that, Old Testament studies, protestant systematic theology, and the study of religious education in schools are notable topics, that have received attention too.
