Hints for successful studies
The offered program aims is to give an introduction into the field of the humanities and the added value and function of Digital Humanities at the same time.
The volume of data, information and with them technical databases and repositories are constantly growing. Therefore methods for selecting relevant information becomes more important. “Digital Humanities” at Göttingen University teach first basic technical knowledge in Digital Humanities and further on particularly technical and medial competences i.e. handling of diverse data sources and the correct and adequate use of basic technology and applications.
Begin with the introductory module!
Just get started with a key competence module you are interested in. Or even better: start directly with our introductory module! Here you get a perfect overview over the wide field of Digital Humanities. In winter term we focus on texts and language, in summer term on images and objects.Get to know the most important tools!
The module „Digital Humanities Tools“ is recommended for beginners, too. In selected case studies a wide a range of important tools is tested.New technologies and unfamiliar processes will challenge you, but in the end you will profit from the experience gained. The regular confrontation with new approaches improves your flexibility and willingness for change.
Don’t be afraid of the computer!
After the first terms you will know the most important tools of Digital Humanities for aquisition, analysis and presentation of data in the humanties and be able to apply them in your thesis and later work life.Get to know your computer and the tools better. Be curious!
Don’t despair if you do not succeed once. You won’t be the first to have this problem! Google your problem, search internet forums, watch tutorials or ask fellow students. Focusing on solutions and the knowledge about the right search terms is part of your study success.Apply your ideas and abilities practically!
In the practical module you apply your skills and abilities independently to a research area in the humanities or cultural studies. You can choose the field in consultation with your supervisor yourself. Thereby you will get not only an insight into the fields research, but also get to know the state of the art research practice in Digital Humanities. In the MA program the critical analysis and usage of existing methods is highlighted. By this means you automatically start asking new questions about traditional research objects.Be critical!
It is crucial that you critically evaluate the used approaches, examine methods and tools regarding their suitability and apply your methodical knowledge self-reflexive on you and your Actions. Keep in mind the social consequences of data and software development while you e.g. work in a team or strive for a higher usability of your solutions.Comprehend and evaluate published research results on the basis of digital data, while trying out different approaches.
Participate in current scientific debates and practice judging scientifically. This will allow you to pursue a successful career in fields related to sociology, history and digital technologies.
Think global and get connected!
A significant advantage of using digital data, models and tools lies in their global availability. Digital Humanities is an internationally orientated subject, which is geared towards the most innovative technological developments worldwide. Never stop exploring! Network! Read specialist articles in English, work through online-tutorials and participate in discussion forums. Communicate and act responsibly and respectfully in digital areas too. Use the opportunity to participate in workshops and International Summer Schools which are regularly organized in Göttingen.Increase your knowledge! Specialize!
