Dr. Volker Karius

At the Department of Sedimentology and Environmental Geology I am dealing with multiple methods in sedimentology and sedimentary petrography. This includes various techniques of sample preparation, grain size analysis, acid digestion, elemental analysis by ICP-OES and mineral phase analysis by X-Ray diffraction.
I started my scientific carrier with studies about contaminated harbor sediments. My scientific interest still focuses on young sediments from the North Sea area and the sedimentary environment of tidal flats and marsh islands (Halligen). Today my focus is on the qualitative and quantitative understanding of sedimentary processes rather than on contamination issues.
How can unprotected marshland adapt to rising sea level? What is a sustainable solution in coastal protection that prevents erosion but supports sedimentation in order to provide sufficient vertical accretion?
