Economics of Poverty, Malnutrition, and Social Policies

In this research area, several issues related to poverty, food insecurity, and social policies are addressed. Current projects we are conducting analyze the socioeconomic determinants of malnutrition, social costs, and impacts of intervention strategies in different countries of Asia and Africa. The focus here is on protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, but also on issues of overnutrition and obesity. Furthermore, we analyze the implications of social policy expenditures for agricultural productivity and growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. The methodologies pursued rely on the implementation and refinement of econometric models, integrating health, nutrition, and socioeconomic details. The empirical analyses are mostly based on primary and secondary individual and household level data.
