Seminar für Englische Philologie
The English Department
Studying English at Göttingen University has a long and distinguished tradition. It has been taught since the founding of the university in 1737, and in 1762 the world’s first Professorship in English was established with the appointment of John Tompson. Today, with over 40 members of staff, spread across the areas of English Literature and Cultural Studies, American Studies, Medieval Studies, Didactics, and Linguistics, the Seminar enjoys international recognition both for its teaching and research activities. Working in a stimulating and inspiring atmosphere, our students get to know the subject in its entire range and are able to choose their individual courses according to their personal and professional interests. They also benefit from access to one of the world’s first class libraries, Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, whose major strengths lie in its research holdings relating to the Enlightenment and English and American studies.
We welcome applications from candidates who will benefit from some of the excellent study and research opportunities on offer.
