MASTER'S DEGREE PROGRAMME IN GENDER STUDIES

CONTENT

The aim of this interdisciplinary master's degree programme in Gender studies is to teach students in-depth specialised knowledge and give them the ability to master the core elements of the subject and apply basic theories and methods. Gender Studies requires a cross-disciplinary approach that links together the perspectives and methods of multiple disciplines and drives theory-guided, empirically sound and application-related research. Well-founded knowledge about Gender studies, theories and methods is taught to enable students to analyse the complexity of gender as a category, thereby helping them understand gender as a social and cultural construct in the past and present. Emphasis will be placed on the following areas: 'Gender, body and sexuality', 'Gender and social orders', 'Gender, economics and material culture', 'Gender in the political arena' and 'Gender, media representation and symbolic orders'. The Master's programme additionally gives students the specialised academic knowledge and general competencies required to continue on with doctoral studies or successfully enter into a profession.

The courses are taught in German language and a sufficient German language proficiency is required latest by matriculation. A matriculation without a proof of language proficiency is not possible.
