Newsletter No. 6 from 9th of December 2010

Dear colleagues and friends,

In this latest newsletter from the research group "Music, Conflict and the
State" we would like to draw your attention to several important upcomping
events: 1) two presentations given by former group members during the regular
colloquia organised by the Department of Musicology, 2) our last two research
meetings in winter semester 2010/11, and 3) our workshop on Music Torture
workshop that will take place on 29 April 2011.


1. MCS-RELATED PRESENTATIONS IN THE MUSICOLOGY RESEARCH COLLOQUIA

January, 12th 2011, 6 p.m.
Mareike Jacobs will present her Master’s thesis research on the Hakkamat, a
female Bardic tradition from Western Sudan, during the regular colloquia for
M.A. and doctoral students organised the Department of Musicology.

Januar 19th, 2011, 6 p.m. NB – NEW DATE!
Dr. des. Dean Cáceres will present his research on military associations in
instrumental music for children during the 19th century. His writing on this
topic will be included in the MCS book project entitled "Little Drummer Boys:
Children, Music and the Military from Antiquity to the Present Day".

Both presentations will be in German and are part of the Department of
Musicology’s regular research colloquia. They will take place in the Lecture
Theatre (Hörsaal) of the Dept. of Musicology, Kurze Geismar Str. 1, 37073
Göttingen.



2. MCS RESEARCH MEETINGS IN JANUARY 2011

The last two research meetings of the winter semester are dedicated to the
topic of the role of music in torture, in preparation for the Music Torture
workshop that will be held on the 29th of April, 2011.

3. INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP "MUSIC AND TORTURE: RESEARCH PERSPECTIVES"
The aim of the workshop is to establish the current state of research into
the use of music as an instrument of torture, and to establish research
priorities for the future. A full programme will be published early in the
New Year.
Five places have been reserved for students and colleagues of the University
of Goettingen. Due to the limited number of places available, we ask that
those who wish to attend register with us as soon as possible by sending an
email to mcs-info@goettingen.de.
