Seminar für Mittlere und Neuere Geschichte

To all first-semester students: Feel free to join our freshman WhatsApp-Group (QR code) so you can connect with other freshmen. There are also tutors in the group who are already studying history in Göttingen and are happy to help you with any questions you may have. You can find initial information about the schedule for Orientation Week and relevant details about studying in our department on our website. If you have any questions in advance regarding the organization or your upcoming studies, please feel free to contact the student department group, which will be overseeing your orientation week.

With effect from 1 January 2027, the Chair of Eastern European History will be filled by PD Dr Moritz Florin. The SMNG is delighted that he has accepted the appointment and looks forward to working with him! After completing his degree in History, Latin American Studies, Economics, Musicology and Eastern European Studies, he was awarded his PhD in 2013 and completed his habilitation in 2022 at the University of Hamburg, where he had been working as a research fellow since 2009. Since 1 April 2025, he has been Head of the Max Weber Foundation’s office in Georgia, from where he is now moving to Göttingen.

It was a wonderful event! On 3 June, we celebrated our department’s 150th anniversary with over 350 guests in total, carrying on the celebrations until late in the evening. Under the theme ‘Historical academic cultures in and beyond Göttingen’, lecturers from our department explored milestones in Göttingen’s historical scholarship through a series of talks. The highlight of the evening was the inaugural lecture by Prof. Dr Kathrin Klausmeier.
Our heartfelt thanks go to all the visitors and everyone involved who, through their dedication both on stage and behind the scenes, ensured that we can look back on this day with great joy!

The new colloquium schedules for the coming semester will be published here at the start of the 2026/27 winter term. Students, lecturers and anyone else interested are once again warmly invited to attend the sessions.
