Dentistry (State Examination)

Features

Since the winter semester 2021/22, new licensing regulations have applied to the study of dentistry. Anyone who started studying dentistry up to and including the summer semester 2021 will study according to the old licensing regulations. All new students starting their studies from the winter semester 2021/22 will study according to the new licensing regulations. If you wish to apply for a higher semester, please refer to the information provided by the Dean of Studies. The following information relates to studying under the new licensing regulations.

In Göttingen, dental training is practice- and patient-oriented as well as scientifically based. Students carry out patient treatments during their studies - always under the intensive guidance and supervision of university lecturers and assistants. In the ultra-modern phantom course room, 40 workstations with multimedia equipment for training on phantom heads are available on 175 square meters. The Student Innovation and Training Center for Dentistry (SINUZ) - a state-of-the-art skills lab that opened in January 2015 - enables students to train and improve their practical skills outside of lectures.

Details

University training in dentistry begins with basic science subjects (biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy, etc.). Initial propaedeutic courses in dentistry are also carried out. After successfully completing the first section of the dental examination, the “phantom year” follows, in which students learn dental skills on a phantom head. After completing the second section of the dental examination, students treat patients in the following 4 semesters under intensive guidance and supervision in various courses as part of standard care. They also acquire a broad cross-section of medical knowledge, e.g. in emergency medicine, pain medicine, dermatology or health sciences.

Structure

Preclinical study section

The pre-clinical course in dentistry comprises 4 standard semesters. It serves to teach the central scientific and dental propaedeutic basics for further studies.

Phantom year

The phantom year serves to learn central practical skills for the later treatment of patients in extensive practical training on the phantom head. The phantom year comprises 2 semesters.

Clinical study section dentistry

The clinical course of study in dentistry lasts at least 4 semesters. It again comprises a series of compulsory courses, but is largely characterized by practical training. The third section of the dental examination takes place over the course of six months (examination semester).
