Tuition and fees
Tuition for doctoral studies is fully subsidized by the government for international and domestic students.
The administrative semester fee of approx. 300 EUR covers transportation (local buses and regional trains in Lower Saxony, Hamburg and Bremen) and a number of added amenities.
Doctoral students who receive a scholarship from public German funding schemes (e.g. DAAD, Max Planck Society) will pay a reduced fee (by 75 EUR) upon presentation of their scholarship confirmation to the Registrar's Office prior to paying the semester fees.
Funding
Usually, the research group or department provides funding to their doctoral students in the form of either an employment contract or a scholarship (approx. monthly amount of scholarship or net salary: 1100-1400 EUR).
The graduate school has limited funds for scholarships. GGNB offers Junior Group Stipends for students working with a Junior Group Leader (max. duration 12 months). We also offer Bridging Funds (duration: max. 3 months) as start-up, bridging or wrap-up stipends for doctoral students.
You may also apply for your own funding. The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) has a comprehensive scholarship database where you can search for suitable funding options for your PhD studies in Germany. As an international student, you may also contact the DAAD office in your home country to find out about funding options.
