Press release: Mathematical Institute welcomes Humboldt scholar

Prof. Dr. James F. Davis to work on the classification of high dimensional manifolds

(pug) As of this autumn, Göttingen University’s Mathematical Institute has the pleasure of hosting Prof. Dr. James F. Davis of the Indiana University in Bloomington. Thanks to a grant of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Prof. Davis will be working as a visiting scholar together with Prof. Dr. Thomas Schick. In their research, both are interested in the classification of high dimensional manifolds – geometric objects used to describe complex physical processes. Prof. Davis’ expertise in algebra and geometry complements Prof. Schick’s analytical knowledge. They will also apply techniques referring back to David Hilbert’s list of 23 mathematical problems first formulated in 1900.

James F. Davis studied Mathematics at Stanford University in California, where he completed his PhD in 1982. After positions at Princeton, Notre Dame and Chicago, he joined Indiana University, where he holds a professorship at the Department of Mathematics. In 1986 and 1987, he worked together with a Collaborative Research Centre at Göttingen University. As a Humboldt scholar and visiting scientist, he also spent time at the universities in Mainz, Münster, Bonn, Stanford and Berkeley.
