Dr. Nadine Sieveking

Research Fellow, ERC-Project 693457 Private Pieties, Mundane Islam and New Forms of Muslim Religiosity: Impact on Contemporary Social and Political Dynamics (case study Senegal)

Nadine Sieveking is working on transcultural performative practices, gender, transnational migration, the formation of cosmopolitan urban social spaces and Islamization in West-Africa. Her regional focus is on Germany, Senegal, Burkina Faso, and Ghana. After her dissertation on African Dance in Berlin she conducted research on the appropriation of global development discourses in local Muslim society in Senegal, on migration from and within West Africa, as well as on the border crossing networks of contemporary choreographers from Burkina Faso and Senegal, focusing on the professionalization of artistic practice and its gendered dynamics. In the framework of the ERC-research project on 'Private Pieties' directed by Prof. Roman Loimeier she has explored everyday practices of Senegalese Muslims forming part of educated urban middle classes, carrying out three contrastive case studies: on fitness practices, contemporary choreography and Qur’an reading courses.
