Development of novel isocyanate-based acceleration systems for use in the wood-based panel industry

The project deals with a new process for accelerating the reaction of isocyanates. In addition to formaldehyde-containing resins based on melamine, urea or phenol, isocyanates are also used in the production of wood-based materials. Compared to condensation resins, isocyanate bonds have a high hydrolysis stability and do not emit formaldehyde, however, the lower reaction rate has an adverse effect on the possible production quantities. The use of ammonium compounds is a cheaper and faster alternative to the currently available acceleration systems. Within the framework of the project, the reaction mechanisms and possible applications in the production of wood-based materials are to be investigated and implemented in practice.
