If you would like to do a doctorate at the faculty, you can do so as a research assistant, for example. In this case, you will work at one of the faculty's professorships and, in addition to your doctorate, you will take on teaching tasks and usually also supervise seminar papers and theses. Positions as a research assistant are advertised by the respective professorships as needed. If you are hired, the holder of the professorship is also the supervisor of your doctoral thesis. In addition, you can also do your doctorate as a staff member in a research training group or doctoral programme that is financed by a third party. An overview of the research training groups and doctoral programmes of the Göttingen Graduate School for the Social Sciences (GGG) can be found here. You also have the possibility to do your doctorate alongside your (external) job or to finance your doctoral studies, for example, through scholarships from organisations and foundations. Certain admission requirements must be fulfilled for admission to doctoral studies. Above all, for example, you must have a confirmation of supervision from a professor confirming that he or she will supervise your written work.

Doctoral students wishing to commence their doctoral studies programme in summer semester need to submit their application documents to the office of the Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences by March 15th. For the winter semester, the deadline is September 15th.

All required application documents please have to be handed in in hardcopy by post or face-to-face after prior arrangement:

Martin Ertelt
Office of the Dean of Studies
Faculty of Social Sciences
Georg-August-University Göttingen
Platz der Göttinger Sieben 3 (Room 1.112, Oeconomicum)
37073 Göttingen

The Graduate Committee of the Faculty of Social Sciences will decide whether you can be admitted (if necessary under conditions) promptly after the application deadline. A decision will be submitted by post.
