The Research Training Group 2300 is hosting a workshop on Scientific Writing. It is open for up to 9 additional GFA members.

Seminars objectives:

  • Introduction: Why publish and why, particularly, in English? When to start? Support resources.
  • Choosing a journal, text matching, predatory & trick journals, your audience, factors affecting choice, scope, those impact factors, open access.
  • Ethics of Publication; COPE, Vancouver rules and other bodies, authorship, author order, contributorship statements, coauthors, corresponding authors, chaperones. Grievance procedures.
  • Planning and execution, structure, overall style of language, clear and concise writing, writing problems and how to avoid them, cultural sensitivity, cultural transferability
  • The Discussion; purpose, content, tense, structure. Introducing tense, voice and mood. Introducing modular writing and why it helps.
  • The Methods; purpose, content (Bishop report implications), tense, structure
  • The Results; purpose, content, tense, structure. What goes in figures, images and tables. Effective placing and citation of figures, images, tables. Warnings on image manipulation.
  • The Introduction; purpose, content, tense, structure
  • The Title, Abstract, Key Words, Search Engine Optimization, Literature list, Acknowledgements (Conflicts of Interest).
  • Submitting your MS, procedures, response when something goes wrong, covering letters. Rejection – don’t panic! Different types of rejection. Best responses.
  • Conditional acceptance, dealing with those referees, who are referees, what is their job, effective preparation of your responses, arguing your case.
  • Accepted !! The final text. Proofs: what to do and what not to do?
  • Copyright, ‘First online’, preprints & preprint servers
  • Publicizing the publication: Why publicize, who to publicize to (your colleagues, your boss, your institution, the world), how publicize, the Press (dangers of the media, University Press offices), social media


Absence policy

To earn credits for a workshop/course, you must not miss more than 10% of total contact hours. In most cases, this will be less than a day. If it is inevitable that you miss more than a whole day, please notify us well in advance (at least one week).
