Göttingen Summer-School on Chinese Law 2021

The German-Chinese Institute for Law would like to thank all participants who took part in the digital lecture series "Göttingen Summer School on Chinese Law" in September.

We are pleased that, despite the challenges caused by the pandemic, we were able to hold the lecture series again this year in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law Hamburg. The event was aimed primarily at students, doctoral candidates and practitioners who wanted to gain an initial insight into Chinese law or who wanted to deepen their knowledge in this field. The focus was on the professional exchange on current developments in Chinese law and legal practice in China.

The main part of the summer school was the daily lecture "Chinese Business Law" by Professor Dr. Knut-Benjamin Pißler, Senior Research Fellow for Chinese Law at the Max Planck Institute. In addition, we were pleased to welcome a large number of scholars and experts on various selected topics of Chinese law, who were available for Q&A sessions after their presentations.

This year, the institute was particularly honored to welcome Professor Donald Clarke (The George Washington University Law School), who gave a lecture on the subject of “Order & Law in China”, Professor Dr. Yuanshi Bu (University of Freiburg), who discussed Chinese Tort Law, and Professor Dr. Eva Pils (Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London), who spoke on the current situation of human rights lawyers in China. Ms. Yundan Bao and Mr. Christian Müller-Kemler from the consulting company PKF Fasselt in Duisburg spoke about the opportunities and challenges created by the “One belt, one road initative” with a focus on the industrial area of Duisburg. Other speakers gave presentations on Chinese data protection law, the social credit system, arbitration in China and other selected topics of Chinese law.

Since the lecture series was held in English and specifically aimed at international guests, we were excited to welcome participants from all over the globe, including China, Mexico, France, England, Poland and Germany, most of whom had a background in Sinology or Law. Despite the ongoing pandemic regulations, many of the students and practitioners were able to get to know each other at networking events at the Café Botanik in Göttingen as well as via the "Wonder" platform, which enabled a digital but personal exchange. Nonetheless, we hope to conduct the Summer School as a physical event next year and look forward to many registrations!
