COP15: Launching Nature Positive Universities Pledges
During the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15) on December 8, 2022, the new global initiative Nature Positive Universities was launched. Its aim is to align the international higher education sector towards a nature-friendly future within the framework of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Participating universities have officially committed to working together towards this goal. Members of Nature Positive Universities, including the University of Göttingen, intend to develop, implement, and document local climate and biodiversity-promoting measures. Exchange of experiences within the network is designed to support implementation and foster project ideas. Faculty and students can actively contribute to sustainable projects on campus. Committed students can also connect with other activists worldwide, receive training, and initiate their own measures and projects in Göttingen as network ambassadors. The University of Göttingen already maintains a stock of approximately 3,600 trees, increasingly establishes flower strips on many green areas, operates three botanical gardens, and maintains an area for the protection of the endangered European field hamster.
