The University of Göttingen endorses the concept of ‘Education for sustainable development”. Part of this endorsement is the wide inclusion of sustainability topics in different study programmes as well as different degree programmes. The faculties offer a variety of modules, certificates and degree programmes that address the issue of sustainable development, a selection of which is presented here.
Information concerning the modules
In general, you will find modules in every degree programme, sometimes even specialisations focussing on sustainability issues. Please note the information on prior knowledge that is required or restricted numbers of participants. It can be found in the description of the modules. In case of any further questions, please consult the respective educator. Modules addressing sustainability can be searched via UniVZ by using different keywords.
Successfully completed modules can be taken for credit – according to the examination regulations of your degree programme. Usually, they can count as a key competence or

Ökologie - Beruf oder Berufung?
Wenn Sie sich für Tiere und Pflanzen und deren evolutionäre Entstehung interessieren und ihnen Naturschutzbiologie und ökologische Fragestellungen vertraut sind, dann erlernen Sie hier in Göttingen die Methoden und Kenntnisse, um moderne Biodiversitätsforschung zu verstehen und anzuwenden. Feldforschung, molekulare Techniken und computergestützte Ökosystemforschung finden Sie in einem Studiengang. Der Bachelor Abschluss qualifiziert für unsere englischsprachigen Masterstudiengänge mit ökologischer und biologischer Ausrichtung.

Die Ethnologie beschäftigt sich mit den unterschiedlichen Lebensweisen der Menschen in ihren kulturellen und sozialen Ausdrucksformen, weltweit und zu allen Zeiten. Ihr Gegenstandsbereich ist so breit wie das Leben der Menschen selbst: Soziale, politische und ökonomische Phänomene werden ebenso untersucht wie religiöse, ideelle und normative, wobei gerade auf die wechselseitige Durchdringung aller Bereiche geachtet wird. Kennzeichnend für die Ethnologie ist die Erforschung "fremder" und "kulturell anderer" Lebensweisen und Gesellschaften - und damit die Relativierung des "Eigenen" und Selbstverständlichen. Und ganz egal wie "befremdlich" andere Lebenswelten und Handlungsweisen erscheinen mögen, immer geht es darum, sie aus der Sicht der Anderen verstehend zu erfassen.

Mehr als Wald und Bäume: Durch Veranstaltungen aus Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften, Informatik, Wirtschaft, Recht, und Politik bietet der Studiengang eine vielseitige Ausbildung mit Praxisbezug zu Wald und Holz. Im Studium wird unter anderem geklärt, warum es auch für Bäume Inventuren gibt, wie Landkarten am Computer entstehen und weshalb man aus Pappelholz besser keine Gartenmöbel baut. Das Studium qualifiziert für ein berufliches Engagement rund um Wald und Natur beziehungsweise für einen weiterführenden Masterstudiengang.

Die Geographie stellt ein Bindeglied zwischen Natur-, Sozial-, Wirtschafts- und Geisteswissenschaften dar. Das abwechslungsreiche und praxisorientierte Bachelor-Studium führt in drei Jahren (sechs Semester) zu einem für Beruf oder Masterstudium qualifizierenden Abschluss. Im Kern geht es um die Beziehung und Wechselwirkung zwischen dem handelnden Menschen und seiner natürlichen Umwelt. Geograph*innen denken interdisziplinär, international, interkulturell und nachhaltig. Dabei hinterfragen sie auch Themenkomplexe wie etwa den der Nachhaltigkeit kritisch und reflektieren deren Einbindung in natürliche und sozioökonomische wie politische Zusammenhänge.

Gender Studies is concerned with the social category "gender". In society, gender plays a significant role in determining systems of human thinking and knowledge as well as social and cultural forms of organisation. Gender Studies examines, amongst other things, the creation, meaning and relevance of gender on various levels. In order to guarantee this wide range of topics, Gender Studies is organised as an interdisciplinary subject at Göttingen University.

The Bachelor Degree Programme Molecular Ecosystem Sciences is an international three year programme aimed at motivated and qualified students from European countries and abroad. As the courses are entirely in English, the students' language skills are expected to be at high level. The Degree Programme combines molecular and ecosystem studies and students will be involved in both fields.
Most of the teaching modules include practical work, field and laboratory courses or seminars in addition to the lectures so students will get a lot of hands on practical training.
An understanding of ecosystem processes requires a detailed view of their molecular basis so students will gain diverse and advanced knowledge in natural sciences and related disciplines.

Ökosystemmanagement ist ein interdisziplinärer Studiengang an der Schnittstelle von naturräumlichen Gegebenheiten und menschlicher Nutzung. Die fachlichen und methodischen Inhalte greifen den Nachhaltigkeitsgedanken auf, sie orientieren sich an den gegenwärtigen und zukünftigen Aufgaben der Gesellschaft und am Arbeitsmarkt. Als Studierende lernen Sie innerhalb des 3-jährigen Studiums die wichtigsten fachlichen und methodischen Grundlagen von Ökosystemen und deren Management kennen. Sie erlernen die fundamentalen Sachverhalte und Konzepte der Ökologie und erhalten das Handwerkszeug für den Schutz und die nachhaltige Nutzung von terrestrischen Ökosystemen mit ihren Ressourcen.

In dem internationalen Studiengang erwerben die Studierenden forschungsnah vertiefte Kenntnisse und Fertigkeiten in der Biodiversität, Ökologie und Ökosystemforschung, Evolution, Systematik, Naturschutzbiologie und der biologischen Spurenkunde. Zusätzlich steht ihnen ein breites fakultätsübergreifendes Angebot von Ergänzungsmodulen offen. Lecture Series "Nachhaltige Entwicklung"
With the new interdisciplinary lecture series “Sustainable Development”, the University of Göttingen is offering students from all faculties the opportunity to take an in-depth look at sustainability and sustainable development from the summer semester 2024. Each lecture will be held by two lecturers from different faculties. The next “Sustainable Development” lecture series will be offered in the summer semester of 2025. The lecture will be held in German.
