Economic contribution and Charactersterization of family members helping in agricultural employment in Indonesia
Daniela de la Hoz will use representative data from rural areas of Sumatra, covering non-farm households, to analyze
- i) the determinants of unpaid work outside the household – with a gender perspective- and
- ii) value this work.
It is hypothesized that unpaid work done by women outside the household is more influenced by the number of children, employment status of household head, household income, age, number of elderly, education of household head and wife, and more prevalent in rubber than oil palm plantations. Also the situation of women in rubber, oil palm and other plantations should be more deplorable than that of men, particularly their employment status and income. Harvesters employ assistants when the daily target is increased, especially during peak seasons and many women have found employment but under unsatisfactory conditions.
