Felix Klein (1849 to 1925)

Felix Klein (1849 to 1925) studied mathematics at the Universities of Bonn, Göttingen and Berlin and habilitated in 1871 at the Georgia Augusta. Following postings in Erlangen, Munich and Leipzig the mathematician accepted an appointment offered by Göttingen’s University in 1886. With his research he dominated the specialist subject of geometry; additionally the scientist played a crucial role in the University of Göttingen becoming a global centre of mathematics. Felix Klein successfully campaigned for the establishment of teaching posts for applied mathematics and stochastics. Additionally he was an advocate for the restructuring of mathematics lessons in schools and ensured that with the teaching position for didactics of mathematical science in Göttingen the first of its kind was established at a German university. Klein retired in 1913.
