Important information on application and admission procedure for prospective M.A. students at the Faculty of Humanities
Dear prospective master's students,
a warm welcome to our faculty!
This page provides you with information about the master's programs and the organizational steps required for them.
In the column to the right, you will find links to the information you may need as a student beginning a master's degree at the Faculty of Humanities.
We are looking forward to supporting you during your studies!
You have to take the following steps in order to begin your master studies at the Faculty of Humanities:
1. A successful online application is the first step towards the desired master's program.
2. After the online application, your documents will be reviewed. After a few weeks, you will receive an admission or a rejection letter..
3. After receiving an admission letter, you must enroll for the degree program (major). Module packages (minor subjects) will be added to your FlexNow account by the Examination Office later.
4. After you have successfully enrolled, you will be able to register for courses in your specific degree program(s).
5. If you have received a learning agreement upon admission, you have to complete the BA modules from the learning agreement within your first two semesters. Please note that registration via the examination management system FlexNow is not possible for the modules from the learning agreement. In this case, please inform your lecturers about this and have them, as well as your study advisor of your department sign the form for the learning agreement (see right column). Afterwards, send the complete learning agreement form to the master coordination.
Please note that the BA modules from the learning agreement cannot be considered for your master's degree program..
All new students are advised to take part in the Orientation Phase (offered for only winter semester). Students starting their studies in the summer semester should contact the Study and Examination Advisory as well as the respective study advisor of the department before the start of the semester.
If you are pursuing or have pursued your B.A. degree at our university - this applies to both non-international and international students - please note the following steps:
1. If you want to pursue an M.A. program at the University of Göttingen, you have to re-register for the coming semester by the deadline. If you nevertheless choose not to pursue an M.A. program at the University of Göttingen after re-registering, you can apply for reimbursement of semester fees.
2. You can apply for a master's program within the regular application periods, even if you are not sure whether you will complete your BA studies by the start of the master's program. For an application, you have to provide at least 150 credits in your FlexNow transcript. If your BA studies will be acknowledged as relevant for the master programme you applied for, a conditional admission will be granted allowing conditional enrollment.
3. If you have received a letter of conditional admission, you have to make sure that all exam scores of your BA studies including your BA thesis are registered in your FlexNow account by November 15th (application for winter semester) or by May 15th (application for summer semester). If you wrote your BA thesis in another faculty, you have to provide your degree or an equivalent confirmation to the master's coordination.
Please note: according to the new regulation, in some cases the deadline for submission of the proof of the BA degree can be extended until
By 15.11. as well as 15.05., the master coordination will check which master's students can receive an extension of the deadline. By then, the corresponding achievements must have been entered in FlexNow. The students will be informed electronically about the approval of a deadline extension.
4. If you have received a (conditional) admission letter, you have to submit an application for a change of your course of study to the Office of Student Affairs. If you are an international student completing your B.A. degree at the University of Göttingen, you must submit this application to the International Office (Ms. El-Omar).
5. After your enrollment you can register for the courses of your program..
If you are pursuing or have pursued your B.A. studies at a university other than the University of Göttingen - this applies to both non-international and international students - please note the following steps:
1. An application is possible within the respective application periods, even if you are not sure whether you will complete your B.A. studies by the beginning of the master's program. International students who need a visa must apply within the first regular application period. If you have not yet completed your BA studies at the time of application, an official transcript of records with at least 150 ECTS will be sufficient (provided your bachelor's program is aligned with the European Credit Transfer System).
2. BA conditional admission will be issued in case of subject-specific eligibility, which allows for conditional enrollment. YYour Bachelor studies (i.e. a total of 180 credits) must be completed by November 15th (application for winter semester) or until May 15th (application for summer semester). You have to provide your Bachelor degree certificate or an equivalent confirmation to the master coordination by that date.
Please note: according to the new regulation, in some cases the deadline for the submission of the proof of the BA degree can be extended until 31.03. (application for winter semester) or until 30.09. (application for summer semester). An extension of this deadline is only possible in the following two cases:
a) only the BA thesis is missing in order to complete your BA studies or
b) the BA thesis has already been submitted to the Examinations Office and max. 6 ECTS are missing for the completion of your BA studies.
After November 15th or May 15th (depending on the semester you applied for) the master coordinator will check which students can be granted an extension of the deadline. Appropriate evidence must have been submitted by then to the master coordination (by email). The students will be informed about an extension of the deadline electronically.
3. After you have successfully applied and received a (conditional) letter of admission, you must submit the application for enrollment to the Office of Student Affairs no later than 30.09. (for winter semester) or by 31.03. (for summer semester). If you are an international student who is pursuing or has pursued your BA studies at a German or foreign university, you must submit this application to the International Office (Ms. El-Omar).
4. After your enrollment and transfer of the semester fee, you will receive your log-in data for electronic online services of the University of Göttingen (eCampus, course management system Stud.IP, and examination management system FlexNow). Once you have received this information, you will be able to register for courses in your master's degree program(s). Please note that there are registration deadlines for the individual subjects for the courses. You can find them e.g. in HISinOne EXA or you can ask the respective student advisor of your department.
5. Upon enrollment, you can pick up your student ID card.
If you nevertheless choose not to pursue an M.A. program at the University of Göttingen after enrolling, you can apply for reimbursement of semester fees.
