Seminars Objectives:
Every academic culture in general as well as individual disciplinary cultures in particular is characterized by shared basic assumptions and practices. It is easy to overlook that these implicit rules of an academic system are also molded by cultural differences that not only enrich academic exchange at international level, but sometimes also impede it. For example, problems can arise at the social level, i.e. with regard to interaction, communication and cooperation, or can be related to different academic traditions, i.e. structures of thought and argument. The goal of the workshop is to make the inherent basic assumptions, rules and expectations of academic cultures comprehensible to international doctoral candidates to strengthen their adaptation capabilities. One of the essential objectives of this workshop is to facilitate entry into German academic culture in order to reduce stress, misunderstandings and uncertainties. As a mixture of input, phases of reflection and exercises the workshop contributes towards optimal utilization of personal, time-related and financial resources.
