MSc Geosciences
From cosmos to benthos–Welcome to the MSc Geosciences
The course.
In order to cope with the great social and environmental challenges of today and tomorrow a deep understanding of the system Earth is necessary. In our four-semester international Master’s degree in Geosciences, you will deepen your knowledge and expand your skills in a solution-oriented manner.
The course is modularized and comprises a total of 120 CP. Courses and exams are held in English and you will study in a stimulating, international and diverse environment. The course is research-oriented, meaning that you will address topical questions, deal with large heterogeneous data sets, learn to divide complex relationships into simple systems and will become familiar with the latest analytical methods. Our aim is that this Master’s degree will prepare you for relevant and responsible tasks in modern society, and that both the academic and non-academic professional world will be open to graduates of this Master’s course. In addition, your Master’s degree in Göttingen is an excellent basis for further Doctoral studies.
Majors
You can choose from the following majors:
Geobiology
The Geobiology curriculum ranges from research into the origin and development of life in our solar system, the development of the climate in the history of the Earth, to understanding today's complex biogeochemical cycles.
Geochemistry
Using the latest analytical methods, you will research the origins of the solar system, the formation of the Earth and Moon, the development of the Earth's crust and the complex interactions between bio-, geo-, hydro- and atmosphere in the course of the Earth's history.
Geology
You will study the structure and developmental history of the various formations of the Earth's crust, the resources contained therein (deposits and energy) as well as the temporal and spatial development of the Earth's crust and its components. Field work can be an important part of this major.
Geomaterials
Here you will study the physical and chemical properties of minerals, melts and technical materials using modern technical methods. Experiments at extreme pressures and temperatures provide insight into the depths of our planet. Electron microscopic methods allow you to look into the smallest structures of matter.
Hydrogeology
Water is an essential and often limiting resource on our planet. You will study the distribution and availability of groundwater using the most modern field and laboratory-oriented methods. Geothermal reservoirs are also in focus in the current climate crisis; as a geoscientist, you will work here on sustainable solutions. Your experimental work will be accompanied by computer modeling, which today represents an important part of georeservoir research.
Project modules and internships
Within project modules you will work on a small and focused research project. You will implement your own ideas and learn to answer scientific questions in practice. You can also gain credit points (CP) for external internships in the field of key competencies during the master’s degree. We are happy to support you in finding an internship. The master's thesis - your own research project
You will complete the master’s program with your own six-month research project, which you will summarize in your master’s thesis. In close collaboration with other students, doctoral candidates, postdocs and professors, you will work on a topical research question. Ideally your results will lead to a publication in a scientific journal, or a patent under your authorship. You also have the opportunity to do your master’s thesis with non-university partners. Not sure yet?
