New Assistant Professor

Prof. Dr. Christian Bartelheimer has been appointed Assistant Professor for Enterprise Architecture at the Faculty of Business and Economics at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen since 1 April 2025.

His research focuses on business process management (especially process mining, organisational routines, workarounds), the design, implementation and evaluation of enterprise architectures (especially business information systems, digital platforms and data spaces) and the design, implementation and management of digital service systems (especially intelligent service systems engineering and transformation, AI-based service systems and sustainable service technology).

A particular research focus is on the design and evaluation of innovative IT artefacts in different domains (e.g. industry and commerce) and the abstraction of knowledge about how to develop and use them to support individuals, teams and whole organisations in their work. Current research projects are investigating, for example, how workarounds created by employees can be systematically managed by companies and transformed into process innovations, how knowledge-intensive processes can be supported by process mining, how the co-creation of value in service ecosystems is changing through the use of generative artificial intelligence, and what realistic expectations can actually be placed on data spaces as an EU-funded counterpart to the dominant American and Chinese tech platforms.

His research has been published in peer-reviewed international information systems journals, including the Information Systems Journal (ISJ), the European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS), Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE) and Electronic Markets (EM), and presented at all the leading information systems conferences. He is the current President of the Special Interest Group for Services (SIG SVC) of the Association for Information Systems (AIS).

In the summer semester 2025, the chair will offer the Master's course 'Data and Service Ecosystems'. The seminar consists of several coaching and presentation sessions and follows a clearly structured milestone principle. This semester's topic is 'Prospects and Reality of Data Spaces'. By participating in the seminar, students are enabled to independently write a scientific paper in business informatics and to present and discuss the results. The seminar also serves as preparation for the Master's thesis. In the following winter semester, the basic course 'Enterprise Architecture' will be offered as part of the Bachelor's programme.

Before moving to Göttingen, Christian Bartelheimer was an academic advisor at the Chair of Business Information Systems at the University of Paderborn. After training as an IT specialist, he studied at the Private University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Technology (PHWT) in Vechta and at the University of Paderborn. This is also where he received his PhD in 2021 on the topic "Digital Service System Transformation: Prospects and Constraints of Design' and subsequently held a post-doctoral position until moving to Göttingen.
