Zhou, Shixing
I am a PhD candidate majoring in forest ecology and manegement from College of Forestry, Sichuan Agricultural University (SICAU), China. Now I am a joint-PhD student in AG Scheu sponsored by China Scholarship Council from Sep.2017 to Sep.2019.
In China, I have been focusing on the response of forest ecosystem biogeochemistry to nitrogen deposition in the Rainy Area of Western China since 2010 and to precipitation changes since 2013. My PhD project “Effects of simulated nitrogen deposition and precipitation changes on litter decomposition in a natural evergreen broad-leaved forest in the Rainy Area of Western China” has been performed since March 2016, and our team observed changes of mass loss, organic compositions (i.e., lignin, cellulose and total phenolic), elements (22 elements), soil fauna, enzyme activity and microbial communities during decomposition and soil carbon status, nutrient availability, microbial properties and soil enzymes. The aim of our study is to determine the mechanism behind the effects of nitrogen deposition and precipitation changes on litter decomposition.
Now I’m visiting researcher and doctoral student in the AG Scheu. During my stay in Göttingen I will investigate litter decomposition processes with focus on nitrogen transformations during litter decay. In particular I will investigate how changes in plant species diversity and soil fauna community impact litter decomposition and litter nitrogen transfer. The study aims at advancing the mechanistic understanding of decomposition processes thereby allowing to improve predictions on how changes in plant species identity and composition impact carbon and nutrient dynamics in terrestrial ecosystems.
