Language prerequisites for admission to Modern Indian Studies (M.A.)
Candidates with a native language other than English must have sufficient knowledge in English.
Sufficient knowledge of English must be proven with standardized or accredited certificates at a C1 level (at minimum) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe (CEFR). In particular, the following serve as proof:
a) Cambridge English Scale, minimum of 180 points;
b) „International English Language Testing System” (IELTS Academic), minimum level Band 7 (as of the application round for the winter semester 2024/25);
c) „Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test” (TOEFL iBT), minimum of 95 points (as of the application round for the winter semester 2024/25);
d) Global Scale of English (Pearson Academic), minimum of 76 points;
e) UNIcert: level UNIcert III;
f) other certificate, minimum level C1 according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Successful completion of the test must not date back further than three years prior to receipt of the application for enrolment and admission to the Master’s degree programme.
Exempt from the requirement to provide proof of testing are:
A: Applicants who have spent at least one year studying or working in the United States of America, Canada (with the exception of the province of Québec), the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (including associated territories), the Republic of Ireland, Australia or New Zealand within the four years prior to receipt of the application for admission are exempt from furnishing evidence of having passed a test.
B: Applicants who completed a study programme taught completely in English in the last three years prior to receipt of the application for admission, if (a) the admission requirement for the study programme was proficiency in English at a C1 level (at minimum) according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) or (b) the level C1 (CEFR) or higher was completed as part of certified academic achievements during the course of studies. In either case, proof (in the form of an official certificate issued by the institution responsible for the study programme) is required.
An exception can only be claimed with proof of the specific language level, which is submitted with the application. A simple certificate from the previous university stating that a degree programme is taught in English and without stating the specific language level of at least GeR level C1 or higher is not sufficient for an exemption. There are no exceptions to this rule!
You can initially apply without a language certificate. Proof of sufficient proficiency in English must be submitted by enrollment deadline (usually September 30 for a winter semester). Proof is an enrollment requirement; conditional enrollment does not take place.
If you need to apply for a visa for your studies in Germany, please note that proof of language proficiency in English may already be required by the consular authorities as part of the visa application process.
