Geothermal energy

Among other projects, the university has participated in the EU project MEET (https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/geothermie/663979.html) to investigate the Göttingen subsurface for its geothermal potential. The chances of success of a deep geothermal borehole are vanishingly small, but together with the Göttingen municipal utility, the GZG (https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/forschung/364007.html) is still examining the benefits of a medium-deep borehole. In addition, all new buildings are being investigated to determine whether near-surface geothermal energy (e.g., geothermal probes) can contribute to the air conditioning of the building.
