Alpine Garden

A walk through the Alpine Garden of the Old Botanical Garden is a journey through the world's mountains.

The individual hills of the garden represent different regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. As you wander through the garden, you'll find plants from the lush forests of the Harz and Black Forests, the dry slopes of the Kyffhäuser and Kaiserstuhl, and the snow-capped peaks of the Alps. All of these plants from sometimes far-flung parts of the world are winter hardy here, and some of them have become well-known as popular garden perennials.

The alpine garden is also over a hundred years old, and the stones that were brought in from afar are now charmingly covered with ancient ferns and spectacular moss and lichen communities.

These plants are incredibly resilient, and they can thrive in even the harshest conditions.

A scientific survey found that the Old Botanical Garden is home to about 130 moss species. Some of these mosses are rare and endangered, and they are only found in a few places in the world.

The alpine garden is a beautiful and fascinating place to learn about the world's mountains. It's a great place to relax and enjoy nature, and it's also a great place to learn about the importance of conservation.
