Bitesize Information: BA in English: Language, Literatures and Cultures/English

• Check the list of acceptable proofs here.
• Send your document to Frau Radtke in the English Department.
• Pick up the certificate.
• As WiWi, hand the certificate to Daniel Schiller (WiWiPa). As a regular Joint Honours BA student, hand it to the Studierendenbüro on Wilhelmsplatz.
• The certificate must be handed in by the end of re-registration period for third study semester.

• The English Department is located in the "Altklinikumsbereich" of Göttingen, in Käte-Hamburger-Weg 3, 37073 Göttingen.
• In about five minutes on foot students can reach the central campus area including the ZHG, Theo, OEC and VG buildings. The Zentralmensa and the Mensa am Turm are also in the immediate vicinity.
• For finding rooms and buildings, use the interactive campus map.

• Must-have modules: B.Eng.101, B.Eng. 201, B.Eng.202.
• Choose-between modules: all others.
• From these: choose one of the Practical English Language modules (B.Eng.203-207) as per study profile. Choose modules worth at least 42 credits from literature and/or linguistics divisions, also as per study profile.

• All our instructors are approachable in person, by email and on the phone.
• For in-person meetings, check the information on individual office hours.
• Email addresses can likewise be found in the individual office hours list but also on eCampus - search for the instructor's name.
• Please use your student email address in email contacts, not your private address.
• Please remember that all instructors read and answer their emails regularly. Do not assume they will do so within the next two hours - our job is to instruct, not to send emails.

• There are four profiles in the BA programme: teaching-oriented; "general study"; career-oriented; subject-focused.
• Students must apply for a place in the teaching profile. All other profiles are chosen by selecting appropriate modules.
• The subject-specific profile contains modules that are (almost) at MA level.

• Future teachers (including WiPäd) must go abroad. If they study two languages, one stay abroad suffices.
• Proof must be shown just before the end of the MEd programme.
• Students in the non-teaching profiles do not have to go but should go anyway.
• Options for abroad: studying, doing an internship, teaching ... and others.

• Must-have modules: Linguistics, Literature and Culture; Written Skills; Oral Skills; TEFL and Intercultural Learning (22 credits)
• electives: advanced Practical English Language module worth 5 credits
• electives: advanced modules (at least 21 credits) from the literature divisions (BritLit and/or AmLit)
• electives: advanced modules (at least 21 credits) from the linguistics divisions (Linguistics and/or Medieval Studies)
• makes a total of 69 credit, 3 of these in the soft skills area

Within a month of the publication of the grade, students can lodge an appeal against a grade if they consider it inadequate or unfair (§ 20 par. 1 Allgemeine Prüfungsordnung für Bachelor- und Masterstudiengänge | EN version). The Faculty's Exams Committee will then request a clarification of the grade and, if necessary, submit the thesis/paper to a third supervisor.
To lodge an appeal, send an email to the Prüfungsamt with information on the module/exam and your reasons for feeling treated unfairly.

• electives: advanced modules worth at least 42 credits from the literature and/or linguistics divisions (BritLit, AmLit, Linguistics, Medieval Studies)
• makes 66 credits in total

• must be written in one study subject only
• SEP divisions to choose from: British Literature, American Literature, Linguistics, Medieval Studies
• length of thesis: between 25 (linguistics) and 35 pages (literature)
• thesis topic: rooted in a course or based on personal interest

• Of the 66/69 credits that students must collect in the core curriculum, 16 credits are ungraded by default.
• In addition, students can request the grade of one other module to be converted to a pass mark. This applies only to some modules: B.Eng.302; B.Eng.401; B.Eng.402; B.Eng.501; B.Eng.502; B.Eng.601; B.Eng.603.
• This is true only for Joint Honours BA students, not for WiPäd or module package students.
• The request is made when the BA certificate documents are applied for. See the Forms page of the Prüfungsamt, final dropdown menu.

• The skills to know what a good academic paper looks like and consists of is a very important feature. All divisions have modules that expect such skills.
• The BA thesis is a core programme feature (can also be completed in the other subject).
• Consequently, the B.Eng.201.2 Academic Writing part-module is obligatory for all students.
