"True romance" in Göttingen: Building on related Bachelor's studies, the Master's degree programme in TransRomania Studies provides a deeper knowledge of the language, literature and cultural aspects of the Romance countries and their cultural sphere. Academic and language-related foci are available for the four major Romance languages: French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

The Master's Programme in TransRomania Studies is a consecutive programme that follows and builds upon the Bachelor's programme. It conveys in-depth knowledge in linguistics, literary and cultural studies of the Romance language and cultural regions.
The Göttingen programme in TransRomania Studies is completely dedicated to the Romance languages. It comprises the four large Romance languages French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese as well as the non-European Romance language regions and – in the elective range – Romanian, Catalan, Galician and Sardinian.
The degree programme focuses on the structures, variations and development of the Romance languages and the inherent and varying characteristics of the Romance literatures. Main fields of study are variational linguistics, language contact research, cognitive semantics, historical grammar and syntax in linguistics, as well as interculturality, imagology, autobiographic writing and gender research in literary studies, with the span of literary history extending from the Middle Ages to the 21st century.
The curriculum also offers courses in which you can further develop your language skills in occupation- and application-related fields, explore the Romance cultural areas from trans- and inter-cultural perspectives, or specialize in methodological and theoretical areas, for example Mediality or gender studies. It also offers the opportunity to include an internship about “Language, culture and media: application and teaching”.
The degree Master's of Arts in TransRomania Studies: Romance languages, literatures and cultures qualifies for a university career, for positions in research and cultural institutions, in cultural journalism, culture management and public relations and generally for all fields of occupation that require comprehensive knowledge of the Romance languages and cultures as well as intercultural skills.

Structure of degree programme
This degree programme can be studied in 3 different profiles.
- Single Honours MA totalling 78 credits (Mono-master)
- Joint Honours MA totalling 42 credits in combination with one module package (minor) totalling 36 credits
- Joint Honours MA totalling 42 credits in combination with two module packages (minor) totalling 18 credits each

Previous education
- B.A. Degree or equivalent
- at least 150 ECTS at the time of application
- Eligibility:
- Verification required of academic performance in a Romance programme of study or Romance Philology or a subject of the cultural sciences with a corresponding regional concentration
- in the scope of at least 50 ECTS, including
- at least 6 credits each in linguistics and literary studies.

Language requirements
- If German is not your first language, you must provide proof of proficiency in German at level of the DSH-1.
- For the study foci French and Francophone Studies, Italian Studies, Spanish and Hispanic America Studies or Portuguese and Brazilian Studies respectively:
- French (GER level C1),
- Italian (GER level B2+),
- Portuguese (GER level B2+), or
- Spanish (GER level C1)
- For the subject-scientific study foci Linguistics and Literary Studies the evidence of language skills in two Romance languages must be provided according to the levels stated above.
